Montenegro

Montenegro is home to the world’s oldest olive tree, located in Stari Bar. This ancient Olea europaea is scientifically estimated to be over 2,000 years old and still produces fruit, standing as a living witness to history.

The country’s name translates to "Black Mountain," referring to the dark, pine-covered slopes of Mount Lovćen. These rugged peaks historically provided a natural fortress that helped the region maintain its independence.

Montenegro famously declared itself the world’s first ecological state in 1991. This constitutional commitment prioritizes environmental protection and sustainable development as a core national identity.

The Bay of Kotor is often called Europe’s southernmost fjord. While it resembles a glacial fjord, it is actually a submerged river canyon formed by the sinking of the surrounding limestone mountains.

Ostrog Monastery is built directly into a vertical cliff face 900 meters above the Zeta Valley. It was founded in the 17th century and remains a major pilgrimage site for Christians across the Balkans today.

The Tara River Canyon is the deepest in Europe. It reaches depths of 1,300 meters, carved by the emerald waters of the Tara River, which is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique ecosystem.

The town of Perast features two iconic islets, Gospa od Škrpjela and Sveti Đorđe. The former was created artificially over centuries by locals sinking old ships and rocks to build a foundation for a church.

The Montenegrin coastline features the town of Ulcinj, which has a unique history involving pirates. In the 17th century, it became a notorious base for corsairs who controlled the southern Adriatic trade routes.

The Durmitor National Park contains 18 glacial lakes known as "mountain eyes." These pristine bodies of water are fed by melting snow and underground springs, creating a stark contrast against the limestone peaks.

Despite its small size, Montenegro holds the world record for the most people sleeping at once. During a unique annual competition in Brezna, contestants lie down to see who can stay in bed the longest, lasting for over 60 hours.
