Godzilla vs King Kong

The 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla was not the first time they met. In the early 1960s, a stop-motion animator named Willis O'Brien pitched a script where King Kong fought a giant version of Frankenstein's monster instead.

In the 1962 film, the Japanese version features a different ending than the American release. Japanese audiences saw Godzilla survive the final battle, while the US version implied a victory for King Kong.

King Kong’s size was drastically altered for the 1962 film. To make him a physical match for Godzilla, the filmmakers increased his height to roughly 147 feet, a massive jump from his original 1933 stature of about 24 feet.

The 1962 battle was filmed using suitmation. Haruo Nakajima, the actor inside the Godzilla suit, famously found the King Kong suit actor difficult to work with, leading to genuine, unscripted scuffles during the fight scenes.

The 1962 film was produced to celebrate Toho’s 30th anniversary. They specifically chose King Kong as the opponent because he was the most iconic monster in cinema history at that time, ensuring global interest in the project.

The original 1933 King Kong used a miniature model only 18 inches tall. Animators moved the puppet frame by frame, a painstaking process that took weeks to complete just a few minutes of screen time for the final film.

Godzilla's iconic roar was created by rubbing a resin-coated glove against the strings of a double bass. The sound engineer then slowed the recording down to give it that deep, guttural, and monstrous quality.

King Kong’s appearance in the 1962 film was controversial among fans because he was given electrical powers. This was added to help him withstand Godzilla's atomic breath, though it lacked any basis in his lore.

The 1962 film was the first time both monsters appeared in color. Before this, Godzilla had only been seen in black and white, making the vibrant, tropical setting of the battle a major technological milestone.

Despite their cinematic rivalry, King Kong and Godzilla were once part of a shared creative legacy. Willis O'Brien, who created the 1933 King Kong, mentored the special effects team that eventually brought Godzilla to life.
